baseball

Baseball has a very long history. Modern baseball is said to have been started in 1845 when Alexander Cartwright wrote down the rules of baseball for the Knickerbockers base ball club. But baseball origins aren’t clear because many different countries have games that were similiar to baseball. The one game that resembled modern baseball the most was called stoolball. Stoolball dates back to about the 11th century. There was all the same positions that baseball has today like the pitcher, outfielders, and the hitters. The pitcher would throw the ball at a tree stump located behind the hitter, if the ball hit the tree stump the batter was out, if he hit the ball he would have to run from one stool and back to score a point.

The first baseball league was called National Association of Base Ball Players or (NABBP). This league was formed in 1857 and had 16 baseball Clubs located in the five New York boroughs or outlying areas of New York. This league broke apart in 1871 into a professional league, and amateur league. Professional league paid its players while amateur leagues didn’t. The 2 modern major leagues are the National league an the American league. The National league was created in 1876, and the American league was created in 1901.
